09:00  Canada-Israel Joint Session I: Intellectual Property, Commercialization and Innovation – What Lies Ahead

Since our first Bracing for Impact conference in 2018, many scholars have reflected on the impact of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies on intellectual property law. In Canada, the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology for the Statutory Review of the Copyright Act received numerous reports and comments calling for amendments that will accommodate data mining for AI companies and start-ups for example. This panel will take a step back to review the recent changes and consider how we should move ahead from here.

In the past three years several reports and policy papers were published by the US, UK, Canada and recently – Israel. Many countries have developed and implemented AI policy recommendations. In this panel, we hope to share both Israel and Canada's knowledge and expertise to revise and devise AI policy and consider some of the changes and concerns discussed in our previous.

Smart cities bring together infrastructure and technology in order to improve the quality of life of citizens and enhance their interactions with the urban environment, but how do emerging of advanced technologies shape social interaction within communities and cities in this new age? How does information undergird social norms? How do information technologies filter the experience of existing information and generate new kinds of information? How cities organize and control this information? The panel should be an opportunity to share views on ways to understand our current challenges in creating smart cities.
